Jon left the school in a foul mood. The late afternoon sky was clear blue; the trees, green and healthy; a gentle breeze kept things cool; across the way he could see some middle-schoolers out on a bike ride together. In short, it was a beautiful afternoon. Jon felt like everything was mocking him. How dare it be so nice a day when he was feeling so dark? He saw some birds, merrily chirping away in the trees. He reached into his pocket and said in anger, "I wish you would just shut up!"

They did, but it did little to lift his mood. Contemplating the evil things he was going to do and the people who deserved it, he headed out...

...only to be konked on the head by something falling from above. As he looked to see what hit him, there was a rhytmic "thump thump thump thump" as more songbirds fell dead of asphyxiation.

He stood silent as the tenth bird hit the ground. Luckily for Biff, Jeniffer (and by extension Jon himself), Liz, Mr. Boxer's dog, Beanie, who sometimes kept Jon up at night, and any other number of creatures great and small, the sacrifice of ten songbirds got Jon thinking about the consequences again. He still wanted to, oh, say, wish for a reenactment of Biff's earlier performance with Biff cast as the blonde and Jon as the stud, but did Biff really deserve that? If Jeniffer really was the one who made the wish...

"I just really need to be left alone while I think this through" he said aloud, and headed for his secret spot in the woods.
