Jon disappeared from the room and reappeared in Jennifer's bedroom. Jennifer was sitting there holding the stone. It was weird seeing the stone in two places at the same time. But this was good--Jennifer couldn't have the stone unless Jon keeps the stone at the end of the next 24 hours.
Jon said "I wish that the people who invaded my room and attacked me just before midnight would vanish from existence until I wished them back."
Suddenly Jennifer said "There's going to be a pop quiz in chemistry today." Then she kissed Jon again, just like last time, and said "Have fun, Jon. Just remember that you didn't get the people from the Order who are outside the wish range. But they shouldn't attack today."
Jon wished himself home and looked around. There was no trace of the attackers except a few muddy footprints and an open window. They really had vanished from existence. Just in case, Jon said "I wish that nobody could break into this house to hurt anyone or steal anything."
Then he closed the window and went to bed for the remainder of the night.
This day Jennifer stayed away from him--and as Jennifer, he did want to stay away from himself as Jon, to avoid changing the past. Jon got out his chemistry textbook at lunch and began studying--chemistry was the next period after lunch.
The bell rang and everyone had to go back to class. Confident that he had prepared for the pop quiz, Jon was very surprised to come in to a normal lecture and no pop quiz at all. What had happened? He had to ask Jennifer--no, better yet, he could just wait until he became Jennifer and lived the day again.
When Jon went to bed he set his clock for a few minutes before midnight. It went off at 11:57, and Jon had just managed to wake up when midnight came. He was a girl again--Jennifer--and the day was repeating.
Jennifer was sitting on her bed and Jon was there too. "I wish," said Jon, "that the people who invaded my room and attacked me just before midnight would vanish from existence until I wished them back."
Which meant that it was Jennifer's cue. Fortunately, one of her earlier wishes made it easy to remember what to do. She told Jon "There's going to be a pop quiz in chemistry today." Then she kissed Jon again--and it felt as embarassing as it did last night, even though, really, nobody else knew about it. "Have fun, Jon," she said. "Just remember that you didn't get the people from the Order who are outside the wish range. But they shouldn't attack today."
Jon made his wish and vanished to his room, leaving Jennifer alone to relive the day. Things seemed okay--except for the nonexistent pop quiz.
Why had she told Jon that? The answer was simple. She had to repeat everything that Jon saw and heard. If Jon heard a lie, then she had to repeat the lie. Otherwise she risked changing the past. Now, if she had to repeat something really bad, she could take the risk anyway, but for something small like a lie about a pop quiz, it just wasn't worth it.
And it wasn't just what she said. The kiss episodes happened because she didn't want to change the past by refusing to repeat the kiss. What else might she have to repeat?
The day went uneventfully (of course there was still no pop quiz the second time around). Jennifer went to bed and woke up as Jon, the next day. Jon was still thinking about the whole repeating things idea. But then Jennifer walked up to him, and Jon was really surprised at what he might have to repeat later, because Jennifer....
