Accodring to Liz's (fake) memories, it was Jon who was really Jennifer. So the wish that Jennifer really exist had a strange effect. But Jon hadn't noticed it yet.
"Let me go home then," said Liz.
"It's late," said Karyn. "I need to go home too. Unless you want to wish that we can stay here and alk without any trouble, Jon."
"Well, I don't know," said Jon. "Maybe we can..."
Suddenly Jon's phone began to ring. He picked it up. "Hello?" he said.
"Hello," said an unfamiliar female voice. "This is Jennifer. Or not. Look, this is going to be complicated, Jon...."
Jon punched the button for the speaker so that Karyn and Liz could hear it and talk back too.
"Wait a minute," said Jon. How did you know who I am?"
"Come on and just listen! I'm you! That wish did something. At the end of the day, you turn into Jennifer, and you appear here in Jennifer's house. Then you get to live the whole day over again as Jennifer. Except today, because Jennifer first appeared at night, so you only have a little time."
"What?" said Jon. "I don't get it."
"You live each day twice. You live a day as Jon, and then at midnight, you go back in time and you live the same day again as Jennifer. Then the next day comes as Jon, then you live that day over as Jennifer, and so on. You can even talk to yourself like I'm doing, but if you do that there's the risk of changing the past."
"Changing the past?"
"Yeah. When you're me you're going to have to call yourself and give yourself the same speech I am. If you don't you'll have changed the past and bad things could happen. Now, bye."
"Uh-huh," said Jon. "Karyn, Liz, what do you guys think?"
"I don't know," said both of them. "You'll find out pretty soon if she's telling the truth."
"Yeah... Look, I have to think this over. I'll see you tomorrow as school. If I'm Jennifer, I'll see you twice at school."
"I can't wait to see Jennifer again," said Liz.
"But I'm Jennifer," said Jon.
When the two left, Jon went to bed again. He fell asleep... and suddenly woke up in a girl's bed. He knew he was in Jennifer's bed somehow, and he found that he was perfectly able to find things in the room. He knew exactly how to act to be a convincing Jennifer--of course there never had been a real one.
Jon/Jennifer got up, turned on the light, and glanced over to the clock. She found just what she was starting to suspect. It was 10:30 PM--the same time she had made the Jennifer wish the other day. She really was Jennifer now.
Which meant that the whole thing was true. And also meant that she had to call up Jon and tell him exactly the same thing he was told the first time around.
Jennifer was about to dial Jon's phone number, then realized she didn't know enough of the speech to repeat it. Hurriedly she looked around the room, only to see the familiar stone resting atop a pile of papers.
Jennifer picked up the stone and said, "I wish that whenever I had to repeat something as Jennifer to avoid changing the past, I could remember it perfectly."
Then she put the stone down again and dialed Jon's number. "Hello?" said Jon's voice on the other end.
"Hello. This is Jennifer. Or not. Look, this is going to be complicated, Jon...."
She heard Jon press something, and she could now hear the sounds of Jon's room. Everything was going just as it had the 'previous' day.
Jennifer repeated the conversation, from the other side, and then hung up and went back to bed. She knew this first day was a little strange since Jennifer had appeared at night. Normally, Jon and Jennifer would each get a whole day.
Sure enough, she woke up in the morning as Jon. And still had the wishing stone. He knew that he'd be repeating the day as Jennifer once the next midnight came.
But the whole thing was complicated. Whenever Jon repeated a day, he'd have to take great pains not to change the past. That might be hard, if something really bad happened and he needed to reverse it. On the other hand, the wishing stone was much better at fixing bad situations than a little future information anyway.
Perhaps he could use the stone right now. Jon hadn't, after all, said that he wanted Jennifer to become real by him repeating each day twice as two people. If he wished for Jennifer to become real in some other way, the stone should allow it.
Jon thought about it, and decided....
