“Oh shit...” he said trailing off as he closed his eyes.
After a brief moment, the glowing on the rock died down and Jon was able to open his eyes assuming the worst. A quick check around his room and of his body, Jon confirmed that he was still a boy and that nothing in his room had changed.
“Phew,” Jon said as let out a sigh of relief. “That could have been bad. I could have ended up as a girl or with my head on a dog’s body or something like that.” Jon carefully put the stone back into its box. “Ok,” he said as he placed the box back in its hiding place. “Note to self, no more errant wishes. I don’t want to end up like Karyn.”
As Jon thought about Karyn and her predicament, he realised something. “I said for something interesting!” He almost shouted as he clasped his hand to his forehead. “That didn’t mean that it had to happen to me!”
“Shit...” Jon reached for his phone and quickly dialled Karyn’s number.
“Karyn!” Jon said panicky once his best friend had answered. “I’m in trouble.”
“Woah, calm down Jon-boy.” She told him. “What’s wrong?”
“I made a wish with the stone and now I don’t know what’s going to happen.” Jon heard Karyn groan on the other end of the line.
“You did what?” She asked and then after a pause, she added. “Wait, what do you mean you don’t know what’s going to happen? What did you wish for?”
“I…I was bored and I hadn’t realised that I was holding the stone and…” Jon trailed off trying to delay but Karyn pressed him.
“Come on Jon-boy.” She sounded frustrated. “What did you wish for?”
“For something interesting to happen.”
“That’s what you wished for?” Jon could picture Karyn smacking her forehead just as he had done earlier. “Oh my god, Jon. That was really careless and stupid. Didn’t you learn from my stupid wish this afternoon about Sarah’s boobs and hair?”
“I know, I know,” Jon replied. “I’ve already kicked myself about that.” Jon looked around his room again just to double check that nothing had changed. “But I don’t think that it did anything though,” Jon told his friend. “Everything seems normal here.”
“But Jon, you didn’t specify that the wish would actually only happen to you. It could have done anything within the stone’s radius.”
“I know, that’s why I called you. I wanted to check that everything was still the same with you.”
“Oh,” Karyn replied, a little surprised that Jon had actually thought about that. “But I wouldn’t notice anything different though would I?” Karyn asked. “Seeing as I didn’t hear the wish.”
“Good point,” Jon said. “I could make it so that you were aware of any changes.” He offered. It would certainly help if two people were aware of the wish.
“I don’t know Jon,” Karyn replied sounding unsure. “It could make things worse. What if, because of your wish I'm supposed to not notice anything?”
Jon hadn’t thought about that. He shook his head, he really had made a huge mistake. Jon sighed.
“Well, I suppose that if the stone hasn’t done anything now then we don’t need to worry that much.”
“Hmm, maybe. It’s getting late Jon-boy. I need to finish off some homework before I go to bed. Perhaps we can talk more about this tomorrow?”
Jon nodded.
“Sure, I guess that the stone didn’t do anything too drastic then. Night.” Jon hung up and placed his phone back on the bedside table.
“I guess that I’d better check on everyone else to make sure that they’re ok.” He thought and so Jon left his room to check on his family.
