“Why did I wish to have memories of my life?” she asked remembering what she’d said as she’d held it. As she puzzled it she realized she had a strange sensation of double memories prior to that point, as if she hadn’t remembered who she really was until she’d made that wish. What she hadn’t understood when she made the wish to remember her new life was that it constituted as a change to her body as she was altering her brain so it triggered the effects of Jon’s wish regarding magical changes to his, now Hailee’s, body. So to her it felt normal to have them, as if she had always had them and would think and act as if she had always had them, and because the wish filled her with memories that went back all the way to her birth it made any memories of a life other than the one her new memories presented feel like they were the alien ones.
But thinking about it was giving Hailee a headache. Besides, she might have believed in unicorns and fairies as a kid but after years of punishing her body for dance she knew that there was no such thing as magic. If magic was real then things like ballet would be easy. Absently holding the stone in one hand she reached for the TV remote and turned on the nearby flat screen TV. It seemed like she was going to have a boring night. She’d finished all her homework over at Zoe’s house and it seemed like there was nothing to do. All her friends were busy and it seemed like there wasn’t anything on TV.
“I wish my parents were having a better time out with the McMillans than I am right now,” she said as she channel-surfed. She felt a sudden urge to squint, as if she had something in her eye, when she spoke. When she opened her eyes she flipped another few channels before turning the TV off and heading up to her room, stopping to grab a bottle of water and some sliced peppers and hummus from the fridge.
Again, Hailee was not aware of the particulars of the various wishes that led to her creation. If she had been then she would have known that Karyn’s wish had created Hailee had created just the person, but left an aura of magical energy around her that was slowly filling in the gaps in reality her new life had created. For example, the house she was in had sprung up from nowhere because she had expected it to be there. Of course reality folded so that to everyone within range of the stone at the time of the original wish it had always been there. What this meant was Hailee’s parents, while real within her mind, had yet to be defined in the current reality.
If Hailee had just described them they would have essentially been created out of the magical energy that surrounded her, but because she had made a wish about her parents while holding the stone, she had basically gave the stone the power to define her parents for her, as long as they had a good time with the McMillans. The power of the stone, being somewhat capricious in nature and generally taking the easiest route possible to grant a wish, borrowed some of the magical energy it had given to Hailee before and used that to shape her parents out of the people physically closest to the McMillan’s at the time of Hailee’s wish.
