Hailee and Karyn

Hailee had found herself slipping the stone back in her pocket when Zoe had spoken. At that moment she had been disoriented, though she couldn’t really remember why. She was glad Zoe had believed the line about the book, though. She wasn’t sure why, but she didn’t think she could accurately describe the bizarre sensation of feeling like she was only just now herself. But why she did have a strange rock in her pocket? And why had she wished to remember her own life? She had the nagging thought that somehow the rock was magic and granted wishes, but that couldn’t be true. There was no such thing as magic, after all. Right?
Downstairs, Karyn was letting herself out of the house and trying to reconcile her memories. She remembered coming over to see Jon and help him watch Mikey while they worked out how to use the stone. Then she’d gotten mad and wished he would be someone else, but she couldn’t remember who. Whoever it was had stolen the stone from Karyn and ran into the bathroom that connected Jon’s room with Zoe’s. She’d been pounding on the bathroom door when she heard the front door open downstairs signaling Zoe’s arrival home. She felt like there was something she missed because the next thing she knew Zoe’s friend Hailee Blanchard was coming out of the bathroom with no sign of whoever Jon had become having even been in there.
As she walked back to her house Karyn couldn’t shake the nagging fear that somewhere out there Jon had the stone and wasn’t in his right mind. Would this new person he seemed to have become have the same morals as the original Jon? She had to find him and find the stone. Otherwise there could be serious trouble. Thank goodness she’d put an out clause on her wish to change Jon. She just couldn’t understand why she’d changed him into a random person instead of using a specific name.
The more Karyn thought about it, though, she couldn’t remember Zoe’s friend ever coming in to the house. She knew Hailee was in the bathroom but so had the person that Jon had become. There was no way the two of them could have been in there together and not seen each other. Unless Jon had made some sort of wish that put Hailee in the bathroom instead of himself. Maybe it had to do with the fact that Hailee was a fourteen year old girl like Karyn had wished Jon would be. Maybe he had swapped locations with her or something. Right about the time that possibility came to her Karyn had arrived at her house. As she stepped inside Karyn decided she’d better keep an eye on Hailee Blanchard. It might have just been a coincidence that put her in Jon’s house, but she could also be the key to finding Jon and right now Karyn just didn’t have any other leads.
