Zoe found her mother in the kitchen pulling out some pans to prepare dinner. She casually looked up at Zoe, and her face lit up with a smile. "Oh Zoe! Your wings grew in, that's wonderful."
"Wha yeah " Zoe said, confused by her mother's reaction.
"The doctor said they would grow in soon. Your father will be happy to see them."
"Um, yeah, well I'm going to go out for a bit." Zoe said, as she realized what was going on. The letter had said that the stone would make the effects of wishes fit into the world. Apparently everyone would think it normal that she grew wings. Though that seemed to be the only broad change, everything else was normal.
Her mother nodded. "Okay honey, dinner will be ready in an hour, so don't stay out too long."
"I won't." Zoe said as she turned out of the kitchen. She was a bit relieved that she wouldn't attract undue attention due to her careless wish, but a part of her had been looking forward to shocking people. She stepped out into the cool night and looked up to the starry sky.
"Well, here goes nothing." She said as she stretched out her wings. It was time to see if these things actually worked. After giving her wings a few experimental flaps and stirring up the air she decided it was time to try for real. She extended her wings and then flapped them down hard. Her body abruptly lifted a foot off the ground. She yelped in surprise, and fell back to the ground.
"Well, that's a start." Zoe said, as she regained her balance. Stretching out her wings again she prepared to try again, this time she got a running start first. Running and flapping her wings she could feel herself starting to rise up. Flapping her wings harder and she lifted off the ground and up into the sky.
She looked down in amazement at the ground rushing past below her. It was real. She was really flying. Zoe let out a giddy laugh as she flew even higher, up above the roof tops. It was the most amazing, looking down at the houses below, and feeling the wind on her wings. For the first time she was really happy she had these wings. And this was only the beginning, this was only the first of an unlimited number of wishes. If an accident could work out so well, she couldn't wait to try out some purposeful wishes. She just had to decide what to do first.
