Jen rolled her eyes. "Like, that's all? Wow, mom, that's kinda, y'know, small-time, isn't it?"
"Jen!" Karyn hissed. "Quit complaining! She could have wished you into being a Stepford Daughter or something!"
Jen sighed. "Yeah, you're right. Sorry, mom - I'll try to be neater and stuff from now on."
"Well - good. OK then."
"Uh, mom?"
"Yes?"
"Can I have the rock back now?"
"Um, not yet. I think I better put it away for now - it's better if no one uses it until we can figure out how it works."
"She's right, Jen," Karyn nodded.
"I guess. So when can we come out?"
"In a little bit - let me finish supper first."
Jon's mom - who was now, in fact, Jen's mom - closed the door as the two girls inside resumed their conversation. Now what do I do? she thought in a panic.
