"What?" said Karyn. "You're going to agree, Jon? To become a cheerleader, hang around with Sarah? That's one of the most superficial aspects of womanhood you can have. Some girls are cheerleaders, like some guys are football players, but that's just what men and women do. Not what they are."
"Exactly! It's not essential to being female. That's why I'm doing it. Do you think that because I changed into a girl I want to do some deep exploration of what it's like to be the opposite sex? No, I don't. It's something I can try because it's superficial It's like I'm in a new school now and I'm doing something so it'll be easier to make friends."
"Cheerleading is a lot of work," said Karyn.
"If I get tired and I don't want to use the stone for help, I just quit. It's not going to matter in the long run. For that matter, if everyone finally decides to treat me as a guy--something they don't seem to be doing at all--and it looks stupid to be a cheerleader, then I just quit."
"I'd have thought you'd go with makeup first."
"I'd need fashion sense for that. I tried putting some on the other night. It looked awful. So wish me luck. In a figurative sense, of course."
