Karyn opened her eyes and sat bolt upright.
"Did you make contact?"
Karyn turned and looked at Athena DeVries, the gothic girl she recently became close friends with. With the stone gone, Karyn had to think of other alternative ways to get Jon back. There were rumors that a girl at her school by the name of Athena was familiar with the occult, so she had sought her out. Normally, Karyn didn't socialize with anyone from the Goth crowd, but considering the circumstances, she didn't really have much of a choice. After explaining to the Freshman what happened to her and Jon and Jon's family at DeMorrell's mansion and the fact that Jon didn't return with the rest of them (Jon's family apparently forgot that Jon ever existed, unfortunately ... Karyn wasn't sure why she still remembered ... perhaps Jon made a wish that protected her, before all of this business with DeMorrell happened?), Athena was more than happy to help. Unlike what most people at the school thought, Athena wasn't really all that dark of a person.
And now, they were friends.
Athena was still a novice when it came to witchcraft, but she still devised a way for Karyn to "psychically" contact Jon through a dream-state. And that's exactly what Karyn did.
"Yeah. I talked to him. I mean her," Karyn answered.
"Her? So he's still a girl?"
"More than that. He's also pregnant. And I think the baby is DeMorrell's."
"That's terrible," Athena said.
"I didn't have a lot of time. But I told him that he needs to escape. I mean, unless you can think of a way to save him ..."
"At the moment, I can't."
"Then he can only save himself." Karyn paused. "I think I was able to give him the strength to do it, though. He looked like he might have given up. But if he knows that I'm waiting for him ... maybe it will give him some hope."
Athena nodded.
Karyn checked the time. "Crap, I've got to get going. Cheerleading practice starts soon."
"Good luck with that," Athena said, even though she didn't really care that much about cheerleading. But Karyn was her friend and she wanted to support her.
