Mikey felt ... saw red hair swish against his shoulders. Great, he thought, another girl!

"What's wrong, Melissa?" asked the oddest-looking girl Mikey had ever seen carrying a familiar handbag. It's gotta be him, he thought. Dr. Nakahashi! "Huh? Who?"

The former physician put his, no, her hand on Mikey's shoulder. "It's me, Melissa. Josie."

"Josie?"

"Josie Sanders. You don't look well."

No kidding, thought Mikey. You don't either. Mikey studied Josie's face. It was still quite masculine, though fortunately it had no stubble. Short curly brown hair framed it. Mikey suspected that in time it would expand into Tiffany's huge mane. Josie's eyes still looked Asian to Mikey, though not as Asian as they used to be. She had become what the Japanese called a "half" - half-Japanese and half-European. Her lighter skin, narrow nose, and thinner lips were more Sanders than Nakahashi. But those new traits were trivial compared to her belly. She now fit her maternity blouse and jeans!

Mikey couldn't stop staring. The poor baby. It moved from the girl in that horrible house to Dr. Nakahashi! I didn't mean to ...

"I think you need to see the nurse," said Josie. "I see her a lot. She's been really nice and helpful to me ever since I got pregnant." Her voice was very deep.

Mikey felt even sicker than ever. "Take me there, then." He had to be led; he had never been inside Jon and Zoe's high school before. He wouldn't mind lying down for a few minutes just to think. He needed a break. But the stone wouldn't give him one. As soon as he and Josie entered the nurse's office, they saw ...
