Gillian Gates was watching a cartoon on TV, thinking about how much more fun it would be if she had a friend to watch with her, or to play video games with, when suddenly she remembered Clair. How had she forgotten about her best friend?
She stood up from the couch and headed for the phone, intending on calling Clair. As she reached for the phone, her age decreased further to 33 years old and her hair shortened a bit.
Clair Madison sat on the couch, watching TV, when suddenly the phone started to ring. She just ignored it, until she heard her name spoken on the answering machine. Then she got up and answered the phone.
"Hello?"
"Hey, Clair. What's up?" It was a woman's voice.
Did she know the person on the phone? She didn't think so. But the person obviously knew her.
"Just watching TV," she answered, not sure of what else to say.
"Cool," the woman said. "Is it okay with your mom if I come over?"
Mom? Clair thought. She tried to think about her mom for a moment, picturing a woman in a hospital bed, but then that image was immediately replaced by the picture of a woman in a skirt suit, looking professional. That's right, she thought. Mom works for a law firm.
"She's not here right now," Clair said.
"Well, she'll probably be fine with it. It's not the first time I've ever come over."
It's not? Clair thought.
"Okay, well, I'll see you soon. Bye." Then the unfamiliar woman hung up, leaving Clair a little confused. She had this feeling that she knew who that was supposed to be, but for some reason, she just couldn't remember.
