"What? Where am I?" Sarah asked, looking around the unfamiliar bedroom. But truth be told, the more she looked at it, the more familiar it became. As strange as it sounded, she recognized this as her bedroom, in her apartment. But I don't have an apartment. I live at home with my parents, she thought. And it was true. She did. But she also lived here. It was very confusing.
But it was about to become even more confusing.
As she looked around the both familiar and unfamiliar room, she remembered how she had tried to help her friends Zoe, Zelda, Michelle, and Gladys ... or were they her friends? She had this weird feeling that they really weren't. But that didn't make any sense, did it? She thought harder about it, realizing that Zoe and Zelda were the names of two Goths and Gladys was a fat pig. Why would she consider them as her friends? Something really strange was going on here, but what could ...
She stopped when she saw her reflection in the bedroom mirror. "What happened to me?" she asked, now noticing that her voice was definitely different. Almost her entire look had changed, now looking like some kind of African woman with mocha-colored skin. There was a slight resemblance to herself, but only after she really looked for one. And besides being of a different ethnicity, she was also much older, at 31 years old, actually.
Sarah just stared at herself in the mirror in complete shock. She just couldn't believe that this was happening to her. Something like this just couldn't happen at all, could it? And now that she was thinking about it, she realized that she wasn't the only one who had changed. Zoe was a Goth, but then she had become like Tiffany. And Zelda had become like Lucy. And Gladys had become like Lauren. And the French girl Michelle used to be a young boy that she didn't know, but was now almost exactly like Nicole. Whatever was happening wasn't just happening to her.
As she stood there, memories of the previous night became more clear. She couldn't recall all of it, but some was enough to piece together what happened. She was on "look-out duty" for Michelle when she was planting the drugs in that Goth girl's car. And then she suddenly wandered off. She remembered that at the time, she just didn't care. And she eventually put on the clothing belonging to a cop named Alice Slade. And then she began to believe that she was the cop. She went out of her way to clear the names of those freaks, even after Sarah tried so hard to get them in trouble!
Suddenly, she got mad (really mad) when she remembered that those gothic freaks were actually cleared of all wrong-doing. She may have remembered that Zoe and Zelda used to be her enemies, but now they weren't. Or at least, they weren't right before she thought she was Lieutenant Slade. This was so confusing.
Suddenly, her cellphone rang. Knowing where it was on instinct, she answered it.
"Sarah, we've got a problem," the man's voice said. Sarah didn't know how, but she recognized it as belonging to a cop named Murphy. "Get back down to the precinct as soon as you can."
"Yeah, okay," she said, although she didn't really mean it. Everyone else might have thought that she was a cop, but she really wasn't, on the inside. And she had something more important to do. She had to figure out how all of this was happening. And maybe figure out a way to return things to normal.
