Across town, Jon's mom looked down at the stack of papers in front her. No, it wasn't hard dealing with the writing of third graders and she loved her students, but sometimes she wished she could spend time with something a little more intellectual. They were good kids, though, she thought as she reached for a red apple that one of them liked to leave on her desk. She couldn't tell if the kid was making fun of her or if he really thought that's the way elementary schools worked in real life.
She glanced at her watch. Jon and Mikey would be home now and probably needed someone to be there. Mikey could be quite a handful. One more paper, she thought, and bit into the apple.
Just then, a chill went down her spine and the world seemed to balloon around her. Suddenly swimming in an oversized sweater, her feet no longer touched the floor or even fit within the large shoes that had dropped with a clack.
Her mind raced. The apple? The apple had shrunk her? She tried to get her bearings and realized that she couldn't be more than three feet tall.
Elsewhere, Mikey laughed at his diminutive brother. His game was far from over.
