Jon wasn't sure who could be knocking on his door. They didn't usually get visitors that late. But the last thing he expected to see when he opened the door was a naked young woman. Still unused to her new look, it took him a few seconds to realize that it was Karyn standing there. "What..." he started to say.
He didn't finish the question, because Karyn slugged him in the mouth.
Staggering back into the house, Jon raised his hand to his sore jaw. With him out of the way, Karyn rushed into the house and closed the door. She grabbed a long coat off a hook in the entryway and quickly covered herself with it.
Jon, recovering from the punch, looked at her angrily. "What's the big idea?" he shouted. "Why did you hit me? And why are you naked?"
Karyn turned on him quickly. "I'm naked for the same reason I hit you," she told him. "What was the big idea of turning me into a damned garden statue?"
Jon just continued to look at her in confusion. "What the hell are you talking about?"
"Oh, come on, Jon," she said, moving past him into the living room. "You used that damned wishing rock of yours to turn me into a garden gnome. And then, your mother put me in her flower bed. I've been standing out there all night. What did you expect? Me to be grateful you decided to turn me back?"
"Karyn," Jon told her, "you've got to believe me. I don't know what you're talking about. The rock is up in my room, and has been all day. I haven't touched it."
"Oh, yeah. Right. And I'm supposed to believe that someone else has a way to change me into a yard decoration?"
"I don't know," he admitted, "but it couldn't have been the rock. If it had been, you wouldn't have known the difference. Remember? Only people who hear the wish know that anything happened. If I'd turned you into a gnome, then you would have been just a gnome. End of story. If you knew you were changed, it had to be something else."
Karyn thought about what he had said, and had to admit that he was right. After all, no one but him seemed to notice her own physical changes. "Well, if it wasn't the rock," she wondered out loud, "what could it have been."
Again, Jon shook his head. "Do you remember anything else?"
"Well..." she said, trying to recall what she was doing just before she had changed.
Unknown to both of them, Mikey was on the second floor landing spying on them. "Oh, no," he breathed softly. He tried to remember if Karyn could have seen him pointing at her when he had changed her into the little statue. If so, then she would tell Jon, and he would get in trouble. He had to do something to keep her from telling him.
