It occurred to Sarah, though, that she couldn't really be homeless. She wasn't wearing rags, so she had to live somewhere.
She also had a driver's license. It wasn't hard to take it out, look at the address on it, and figure out where she was supposed to be. She was still an exchange student with a similar name to a baking company, but now Sarah Lee was staying with a dorky student named Jon Madison.
Ten minutes later, Sarah was "home", and scheming a way to get the stone back. How could she get inside the house? There had to be some way... Ah. Jon's little brother Mikey was a Boy Scout and had been selling popcorn door-to-door. She didn't know if Mikey had been to the McMillan house yet, but she had to be able to convince him.
The next day, Sarah and Jon were escorting Mikey around the neighborhood to take his popcorn orders.
"Why don't you try that house?" asked Sarah.
"Because the woman there is mean!" replied Mikey.
"Come on," said Jon, "that's no reason."
They led Mikey to the door and he knocked. The door opened, and Sarah's ex-mother was there. "Boy Scouts... wait a minute, it's the Oriental girl!" She pointed at Sarah. "You were an intruder in here the other day..."
"What do you mean?" replied Sarah. "I was an intruder? How did I get in? Do you remember me entering?"
"Well, no," said Ms. McMillan. "You were just... there in the room."
"You mean I popped in by magic? Give me a break. Besides, I'm just here to watch how Boy Scouts go door to door. I'm not going to do anything."
Then she spotted the stone on the stairs going up to the second floor. It had been kicked onto a step and never removed....
