At the kitchen table, Sarah found her little twerp of a brother "“ frilly pink dress, pigtails and all! He looked just like how she'd left his digital double on her PC, except instead of standing stiff as a board her was currently sat at the kitchen table scoffing a bowlful of sugary cereal.
"Fred," she ventured, "why are you wearing a dress?"
"I like wearing it," he said simply, staring back at her with distrustful eyes.
"And why are you wearing make-up?"
"Leave me alone, I like it!" Fred threw down his spoon in a tantrum and ran upstairs.
"Still a twerp," Sarah muttered.
"Don't tease your brother," her mother reminded her as Sarah followed him upstairs.
Sarah merely shrugged "“ she wasn't leaving to tease Fred some more, but to return to her computer. She entered her bedroom and shut the door.
"Amazing. I guess there's more to you than I first realised," Sarah told the computer program as she turned her monitor back on. Fred's pretty pink picture came back into view.
Her first impulse was to change Fred back before she got into trouble, but then she realised that no one else - not even Fred - had noticed anything different, so how could she get into trouble? She realised it must have something to do with the Awareness options, which she hadn't given more then a cursory glance yet.
There were a few check boxes under that particular heading, but the only one that bore a tick was that of User - which Sarah guessed meant herself or the person who made the changes. Next to it were two boxes, called File and Everyone Else. From the Log, Sarah figured 'File' must mean Fred in this case. Next to these three was a drop-down box that hid some extra, more specialised selections, which Sarah didn't study too closely.
"This 'awareness' thing deserves to be tested," Sarah thought aloud, "but I can't test it on myself, that just wouldn't work..."
She giggled, "Oh poor, poor Fred! What is going to happen to you today?"
