As Karyn peered over his shoulder, Jon carefully opened the book to discover the pages were already filled with journal entries! Not just up to the current day either, but far into the future!
"What is this?" Jon gasped. "Is this... my future?"
"Indeed, young man," the old man nodded sternly. "Although it is somewhat mutable, like all futures."
"This is impossible," Jon muttered.
"Nothing is impossible, with magic," the shopkeeper replied. "A word of caution, however, before you read that book cover to cover."
"Magic?? Please, tell us," Karyn asked.
"The book is a bit... wild. Untamed. As the future is. You may find it useful to peek ahead a day or two and learn your future but I recommend you read no more than that. Your distant future depends on many unpredictable events, which the book will do its best to predict... by using magic. The further you go, the more magic substitutes for fact, for science, for cause and effect. Put simply, the further you plow ahead, the more... improbable your future will become."
"So... everything in this book could come true?" Jon asked, confused.
Then old man sighed. He wondered why he still bothered trying to explain these things to young people. "Yes, essentially."
"Awesome," Jon grinned.
