Jon cautiously approached the new Sarah while Karyn hid behind one of the mall's gigantic fake potted plants. Sarah had turned away from the group of cheerleaders, as though she'd never associate with those types. She spotted Jon.
"Hey, Jon-boy," she said, "How's it going?" Her voice was still her own, but her tone and inflection changed dramatically, making her sound a lot like Karyn.
"Oh.. er, hey Sarah."
Sarah just looked at him, confused.
"Did you just call me Sarah?" she said.
"Isn't that your name?"
Sarah laughed. "Earth to Jon! It's me, Karyn. Karyn McMillan. What's with you today? Don't you know your best friend's name?"
Jon forced a laugh. "Ha, yeah. Just messin' with ya, you know." Sarah stared, not quite getting the joke. "Listen, um... I have to use the restroom, I'll catch up with you later, okay?"
"Okay, Jon."
Jon quickly turned and nearly ran into one of the mall's side corridors, where the bathrooms were. Moments later Karyn -the real Karyn- ran in behind him.
"So?" she asked.
"That was really really weird," Jon said.
"What was she like?" Karyn wondered.
"She was just like you. She thought we were best friends, she talked just like you. She even seemed to think that she had your first name."
"Wait... so her name is Karyn McMillan now? What else do we have in common?"
"I don't know, I didn't talk to her very long. Listen, Karyn. I don't know about messing with people's identities like this. You should change her back."
Karyn looked down at the ray gun in her hands and frowned. "Aw, c'mon Jon. How often to you get to play with something like this?"
"I don't think it's a toy, Karyn," Jon said sternly.
"Looks like one to me. You know, you're being a real party pooper. I think you need a change in perspective." She pointed the gun right at Jon.
"Wait!" was all Jon could say before he was blinded by a flash of white light.
