"We're here to seal that alliance. By marrying you to the human prince!"
Jon froze. His throat felt tight, his breath quickened. But it wasn't just nerves, though the growing tightness in his stomach spoke to the contrary. "This...this is intolerable!" And the prim, pouty, near-shriek of outrage that issued from his mouth only fueled his anger. Karyn sniggered. That didn't help either.
"What are you laughing at?! I cannot do it! The very notion is revolting!" His eyes started scanning the room as he wondered where castle's exits were. "We shall have to escape, and wait out the week."
"Calm down, Allaria. We don't have to do anything like that. I happen to know your wedding is scheduled for ten days from now. We're only here for seven!" A twinkle in her eyes showed she was fighting down another smirk. "If you're upset, it should be because we have only ten days to plan a royal wedding. Talk about a scandal!"
"That is not funny," Jon pouted.
"I'm sure when it's all through, you'll agree it kind of is. Maybe not right away."
"I sincerely doubt that. I am to parade around like this" -- he spread his arms -- "for a week, all while being pawed at by some man?" He shuddered.
"Are you kidding? Everything's going to be proper and polite, or it's my neck. As your bodyguard, I'm also your assistant chaperone -- after your mother, of course. You two lovebirds are not to be left alone with each other until your wedding night." This time the smirk won the battle and seized control of Karyn's face. "I might have to allow a peck on your lovely cheek, but that's it."
Jon did his best to scowl. Karyn, wisely, didn't point out how cute it looked.
