"How do you know Zoe is lying?" Karyn asked.
"I used inductive reasoning from two facts. Fact one - she isn't a goth and fact two - her reaction upon meeting you." Jon informed her
"Okay, I can see you are going to go full Sherlock here."
"Correct."
"Don't let me stop you."
"Firstly Zoe isn't a badly dressed Goth, seems to have a good behaviour and takes an interest in her studies. This is very unlike the often stereotypical attention seeking and disruptive middle child behaviour. That would indicate she is the oldest child now."
"That's not very fair. I'm a middle child and you can't say that about me." Karyn protested.
"Well..." Jon hesitated.
Karyn spoke through gritted teeth. It was clear she was pretty unhappy with Jon's logic.
"Please continue, I'm interested in what you have to say about my so called - attention seeking behaviour."
"Ah.. well if I remember correctly when you first got the stone you said 'I wish I had long blond hair and big boobs and maybe then I'd get some of the attention', did you not? "
"You've taken that completely out of context."
"Have I?"
"No."
"Which rather nicely brings me to my second point. Zoe recognised you but didn't comment on your altered appearance. This would suggest you had made the same wishing mistake in this universe. That would require access to the stone. The stone came from my grandfather and he left it to his eldest grandchild. In this universe that is Zoe therefore she has the stone and is aware of the existence of magic."
"Nicely done. I have one question." Karyn stated.
"What's that?"
"Where's Zoe?"
Jon turned around to discover his sister had disappeared.
"Hmmm... I guess we got a bit distracted." he said.
"A bit, maybe if you hadn't taken so long with your big long explanation and character assassinations, we might have noticed."
On hearing the front door of the house open, Jon and Karyn quickly ducked behind the tree. The two cops came out and closed the door behind them. They walked up the drive and got into the police car. The engine started and the car drove off into the distance.
A surprised Jon peeked round the tree.
"Well I wasn't expecting that."
