Jon felt his body transform. He wondered if he would finally be back to himself but when long brunette hair fell over his shoulders he knew he had just turned into the girl he had seen.
The girl looked around, saw Jon, and said "Come on, Kris. Mom is waiting for us and we have to catch the bus in time."
What? Now Jon was confused.
"Earth to Kris," said the girl. "It's Tina." She waved her hand in front of Jon's face. "Kris, you're not feeling sick, are you?"
"Um, sorry, um, Tina," said Jon. "Let's go." Then he realized he did know the girl, vaguely, anyway. He was Kris, and Kris was Tina's twin sister. Both were students at Apple Grove High. They were going to the mall but had promised their mother that they'd be home by dinner.
Thinking about it, Jon realized it did make sense. After all, when he turned into Bambi, people remembered Bambi and thought she had always been like that. So when he turned into a duplicate of Tina, everyone must have thought he was always like that, too, which pretty much meant he had to be Tina's twin. At least in this body he wasn't bimboish and he could think about what he was doing. "Just a minute," said Jon.
"We have to go, sis!" said Tina.
Jon took out his cell phone--he was a double of Tina and Tina had one, so of course he had one--and punched in Karyn's number, from memory.
"Hello?" said Karyn.
"Hi, it's Jon, I got, well, turned into a girl and sent to the North Mall."
"Jon? Who's Jon? Wait, I vaguely remember.... No, that doesn't make sense. Who are you, anyway?"
"I'm Jon!"
"I don't need these crank calls, I'm having enough trouble trying to... what was it I was trying to do?" Karyn hung up.
Jon hung up his (Kris's) phone. Now that was a bad sign. If turning into Bambi made people think Bambi was real, then if he turned into Kris, everyone should forget about Jon.
(Author's note: the previous chapters did it both ways: people remembered Bambi, yet Karyn was able to remember Jon.)
Yet Karyn hadn't completely forgotten. Jon might be able to jog Karyn's memory in person--but not over the phone where she could hang up. Right now Jon would have to be Kris until he could do something.
Kris ran back to Tina. "Oh, there you are!" said Tina. "Come on, we don't want to miss dinner."
Kris smiled at Tina. "I guess we don't," she said.
