Wallace was a rational person. As pleasant as that situation was, he mused, he'd know it wasn't for real and that would always haunt him. As the lack of reality of this situation dawned on him through time, he reasoned, he'd just not be able to stand it, and would lose that love himself due to sabotaging, conscious or unconscious. He knew all that, and, musing further, he also knew that it wouldn't be fair - he had read lots of philosophers' takes on free will and control, and knew the ethics behind all that. As such...

"Karyn is my friend like she was ten minutes ago..." - he sighed. But, then again...

"I am skilled with women enough to get a good girlfriend on my own merits." - There. That only affected him, and caused no harm.
