I've been visiting Fiction Branches for years but was never the creative writing type. That all changed about a week ago when I discovered a miracle of modern science: NovelAI, an online tool that takes some prompts (in this case, the entire "You Are What You Wish" root episode's text plus my take botched take on the magical dresser) and attempts to continue writing where you left off. It's allowed me take the tiniest spark of an idea and turn it into multiple fleshed-out scenes. I'd been dabbling with it for a few days now and finally got it to a state that I don't feel too embarrassed to share. I'll be posting what I have so far in smaller chunks to allow for more branching. Hopefully my words inspire some of you!

To be clear: NovelAI did not write this story. These are nearly 100% my words and ideas. Any time I got stuck I would have NAI spit out a few possible options on how to continue. Most of it was trash but sometimes I'd find something that could be recycled. AI can't yet replace creativity, but it certainly can help inspire it.

Thanks, sorry about the delay in replying. FB really has been around for a long time. Long enough for the continuity issues to be very noticeable. I created this to give a vague 'in universe' explanation for reconciling the issues caused by the passage of time.

My theory is that he wasn't a girl until Gary said "afraid so." The only thing said before was that he only looks like a girl!

I remember RS232, and PS/2 mice and keyboards very well. I just figured I wouldn't change that. I'll go for the 2002 option.

(Obviously for story reasons it has to be a USB device, since hardly anyone has the stuff to connect any of those other things. I'd just bump the year it was mailed up a bit probably 2002 since that's when the 4.0 story on CYOC was written.)

Out of curiosity I managed to track down the original story to see how it worked there and in that one the Chronivac is it's own independent device, no computer needed.

1999 is a bit early for a weird prototype device to have USB, it's far more likely to have an RS232 serial port, or if higher speed was needed a parallel port, or possibly it would have a custom ISA or PCI card. Windows 98 just barely had out of the box USB support, it was wonky and didn't include mass storage drivers.

Basically anyone working on a product in 1999 would still be trying to take into account machines that didn't have USB into account because it would be most of them, and even those that did only had 1 or 2 ports and the only thing that works plug and play are mice and keyboards, and only then if you have Windows 98. USB was still in the "exists but hasn't seen adoption yet" phase, everyone knew it was going to be important, but you couldn't assume people's computer's had it.

Firewire is also a possibility, but was much more common on Macs.

A fun little musing about how much has changed since 2000. I can't say I miss dial-up Internet.

I love the meta-commentary on this one. As someone who's been writing episodes in the same branch for over a decade, and only now is that branch moving past the first day, I can certainly appreciate how this episode points out how time passes at different rates for our protagonists and for us in the real world.

Always excited to see another one of your chapters and amazing as always! Feel like the wishes come nicely and progress sensibly, every moment serves a purpose. And you do a good job of giving that teetering feeling, like these wishes or always just on the edge of going rapid fire and slipping totally out of control. So excited to see what's in store at the mechanic. Just for my own fan fiction, I'm hoping they have old yearbooks or high school photos in the waiting room, for as beautiful as Joan is, I'd love to see her reminisce and want the figure she had back when she was a teenager. Keep up the great writing!

What a great addition! I like how the scenario is, for lack of a better word, quite 'kitschy', like the stone is forcing Joan into these absurd sexual scenarios, but also forcing her to be oblivious to them. This inspired me to add something, mind if I continue? I can certainly wait if you're already planning another good chapter

I had planned out all their dreams, but wasn’t sure if I should include them all to keep the pacing up, but I don’t see why I cant add them in while I plan the next chapters.

Loved that!!! Now I want to see the other's dreams too. Especially Sarah's dad acting like Molly and Simon and Zoe dreams. Maybe they will have the same dream, making it extra taboo, since Jon and Karyn's parts have a thing for each other?
