In the end, my hunger for new and exciting things won out. I hit accept quest and immediately was greeted by many portals opening up around me. Strange black blobs came out of them, reminding me of ink monsters I used to see on television. It was downright creepy how they moved, never fully taking on a definite shape, just fluidly sliding towards me.

I took a swipe at one of the incoming creatures, partly out of disgust and partly out of survival instinct. One of the beings split in two as the claws passed through, only to quickly coalesce back into its original form. “Great,” I said to myself, “can’t even tell if I’m doing damage.”

I jumped up a nearby tree and landed on a nearby branch, with my feet digging deep into the bark. I took a cursory glance around and noticed that the monsters I left began colliding into each other. I glance at the strange sight curiously as my quest tracker begins ticking upwards: 1/10, 2/10, 3/10. It doesn’t take me long to realize that the mass of each individual blob is growing. Crap, this must be how it balances out the quest, should have done something about the smaller mobs sooner. Probably need to find another way to deal with it now.

Looking around from my vantage point, I spot a lake nearby. Thinking quickly, I dash along the tree branches using my powerful legs to keep me moving out of sight of the giant black mass. Unfortunately, it seems that it can somehow still see me and begins smashing through the trees I had just left from. Forgoing my first strategy halfway to the lake, I jump to ground floor and sprint about as fast as a velociraptor, kicking up a lot of rocks and loose branches on the ground. I glance behind me and notice that the blob is fortunately too slow to keep up with this speed. I take a sigh of relief as I slow down to approach the lake.

Upon entering the clearing a strange sizzling noise reaches my ears. I sniff the air and recoil at the awful stench of the place. Taking a small rock, I toss it into the lake and it immediately dissolves into sand. “Acid lake.” I groan, “This day just keeps getting better and better.” The loud uprooting of trees brings me back to the realization of my situation. I gauge the size of the lake. Too wide to run around without getting caught, but maybe…

“It’s now or never!” I say to pump myself up. I back up slightly and sprint as fast as I can towards the edge of the lake. Just before I touch the water, I leap horizontally, extending my arms out to the side. I pray that my feathers aren’t just for show that they can at least let me glide.

I watch carefully as my body gets closer and closer to the other side, equally afraid of the gradual fall that is also going on. It feels as though time is standing still as the drop begins to happen faster than I wanted it too. “NO!” I yell and bring my legs closer to my torso. However, my pleas go unfounded and I land in the acid lake, just a few feet away from the other side.

“Aaah?” I cry out, but feel no pain. I look behind me, but see no blob monster anymore. I look down at my feet and see the lake is now a much more crystal blue than the tinged green it used to have. “What in the world?” Confusion racks my brain as I look at the progress of my quest.

Receive Reward is flashing on my screen as I’m still trying to come to grips with what actually happened. Did that creature die with before I touched the water? Or did I just luck out somehow and it died some other way? Regardless, I take a look at the possible rewards.
